All with low latency real-time processing suitable for live performance. Certainly the overwhelming sense you get from building patches is that the sound has a futuristic feel to it.With Audulus, you can build synthesizers, design new sounds, or process audio. It's as suitable for sound design and experimental stuff as for commercial EDM production. It leans towards a more modern, clean sound rather than any kind of retro emulation, but you can create anything from fat, wide basses through spiky leads, sequences, lush pads and everything imbetween. Soncially, it's very much a blank canvas until you start building, which is of course the whole point. Since it’s a complete blank canvas you have to add everything - audio ins and outs, controls, connections - as anyone who has used this kind of software before will know. Everything can be freely placed and patching is done by dragging cables between colour coded inputs and outputs. They include everything from oscillators, envelopes, generators, maths, MIDI triggers and sequencers to effects, mixers, faders, I/O, timers and more. Modules (or “nodes”) can be added easily, and these are grouped by type. Everything is draggable, either with the mouse or in iOS, with your finger.Īn “exploded” sequencer node. It’s graphically gorgeous, eschewing the virtual metal boxes of other apps for organic, pulsing lights and objects. Its design however is far more fluid and modern. Conceptually, it’s similar to the products mentioned above in that it is an environment for building almost anything you can imagine. Your desktop purchase also gets you VST (Win) and AU (Mac) plugin versions. The iOS version costs less but is a separate product in its own right, and the desktop versions are standalone products too. What Is It?Įnter Audulus, now at version 3 and running on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPad and iPhone. It’s one thing to make a great patch in someone else’s synth, quite another to build your own instrument. But the rewards - at least creatively – for sticking with it can be high. As you might imagine, this stuff isn’t really for novices. Outside of University labs, the main tools have included NI’s Reaktor, MAX / MSP and Pd, all environments for building instruments and processors from scratch. Audulus 3 might just be the tool that persuades you to take the plunge.Īlthough modular hardware synths have had quite a renaissance in recent years, software has been a popular medium for experimental synth design for as long as computers have been powerful enough to run it. Building instruments and processors from scratch isn't always easy but can be very rewarding. If you’re not working from a kit, you’ll want to make sure you have rubber gloves, rubber bands (or string) and a plastic bag handy, as well. Other than that, the most important thing to keep in mind is something you probably already know: Dyeing is messy! Try to dye outside or plan on putting down a leak-proof drop cloth. Always wash your shirt (or any other material you’re dyeing) first and leave it slightly damp for the process. Prepping for tie dye is easier than you’d think. Here’s how to start: Prepping for Tie Dye With such a rich history behind it, this is a great way to have some fun and sneak in a history lesson to your little ones. A reference to the process can be found in a 1941 book about the Philippines in which members of the Bagobo tribe are described as wearing “highly decorated clothing made of hemp fiber, all tied-and-dyed into fancy designs.” The practice of this ancient tradition even dates back to Peru as far back as A.D. Tie dyeing emerged and became a mainstay in pop culture in the 1960s, but the art is actually much older and meaningful. (Unpopular opinion: It’s also a great time to teach your kids how to use the washing machine on their own. Keep in mind, you can always use your coloring options as a chance to teach some science too. They’re going to keep those shirts or pillowcases around for as long as possible and always remember the giggle fits you had while tackling this fun project. And, honestly, the mess might be worth the fun, especially if you’re stuck in quarantine and social distancing during COVID-19. The tie dye process is proof that there is more than one way to earn a “green thumb” and let’s face it - your kiddos are “dyeing” to do it. But, just like when you tried to dye your hair purple at home, it can go wrong very quickly. Tie dyeing is so much fun and never seems to go out of style. Raise your hand if you’ve ever bought a tie dye kit with the best of intentions and then left it sitting in your laundry room for three years because you just didn’t have the emotional capacity to deal with the mess. This soup can be eaten as a light meal and is ideal for breakfast (yes!), lunch or supper. Today's recipe, okra and salmon soup, is designed to be eaten as the main meal served with a small side portion of eko / agidi (cooked and cooled maize porridge). I can assure that a well put together soup is almost certainly going to nourish you with these important nutrients. I have often wondered, couldn't we change focus and eat soup as our main meal with a bit of carbs on the side? The fact of the matter is, we need more proteins (for healing and cell renewal), more essential fatty acids, more minerals, more vitamins (including the all too important anti-oxidants) and less carbs. Okra & Salmon Soup served with Agidi / Eko Things have changed from that over the century/decades, especially, majority of us now live sedentary lifestyles which means we do not need that much carbs any more. This has been the age old practice especially by our fore-fathers who did a lot of manual labour and needed a carbohydrate rich diet. In Nigeria, soups are eaten to complement the main meal which is usually a carbohydrate based one, examples being pounded yam, akpu, tuwo etc. There are simple (watery) soups and bold (thick) soups, all loaded with an assortment of meats, fish, condiments, spices and other vegetables. Saying Nigerian cuisine is characterised by the range of soups / stews it offers will be speaking the absolute truth! Across the length and breadth of the country and across ethnic regions, there are as many soups as there are vegetables (particularly leafy vegetables).Įach soup is clearly defined by and named after the vegetable(s) used to cook it. He says, ‘You play the motherfucking song or I’m gonna blow your brains all over this room.’ This was just a rehearsal.” And this from the guy who wrote one of the best anti-gun anthems of our time, “Saturday Night Special.” As a band leader, VanZant was nasty, brutish, and short-tempered-in one telling passage, a friend describes what happened when early drummer Bob Burns declined to play a certain song: “Ronnie…stuck up to Bob’s head. Where to start? With Ronnie VanZant, of course, who despite myriad testimonials to his big heart comes off as a drunken brawler with a terrifying tendency for sudden and extreme violence. Not even her pedestrian prose and status as a shiny-eyed Skynyrd sycophant can dull the sheer sociopathic luster of this star-crossed band’s breathtaking dysfunctionality. On this front, Brant’s book succeeds wonderfully. And I’m not alone despite its reputation as a band that only a lout could love, Skynyrd is also revered by such critical luminaries as Robert Christgau, Greil Marcus, and Chuck Eddy.) Because Brant doesn’t really succeed in shedding the slightest amount of light on just how this miracle occurred, and because she gives over half the book to the band’s long twilight following the death of VanZant and the others, Freebirds should be read-as should most rock biographies-as an accretion of really stupid rock anecdotes. (Call me the breeze, but among American groups I’d put Skynyrd behind only the Band and Creedence Clearwater Revival in terms of the quality of their overall output. Instead, it’s the story of some really kind of brainless guys who, between bouts of alcohol- and drug-inspired madness, just happened to produce some of the finest American folk music of the late 20th century. Nor is it a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit or a demonstration of unity in the face of outrageous misfortune. The Skynyrd story is not inspiring, edifying, or even particularly illuminating. Unfortunately for her book, it’s neither. She wants to convince us that the tale of Skynyrd-in which a longhaired crew of working-class “whiskey rock ‘a’ rollers” from Florida get together and, through simple perseverance and true grit, win glory and overcome tragedy-is mythic and inspiring, a story of redemption. Which is the biggest problem with Marley Brant’s Freebirds: The Lynyrd Skynyrd Story. The Skynyrd saga is one of nasty habits, car crashes, suicides, drug abuse and more drug abuse, violent tempers, abused hotel rooms, backbiting, sellouts, betrayal and counterbetrayal, slit throats, grave robbing, child molestation, and enough broken bones to keep your average orthopedic surgeon busy for a year. Similarly, bassist Leon Wilkeson survived only to die in a drug-related accident last year. Guitarist Allen Collins survived, only to be paralyzed in a subsequent car accident and die young. Being a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd was not a recipe for a long life-a fact that singer and bandleader Ronnie VanZant summed up by saying, “We done things only fools do.” VanZant himself perished in that swamp, as did guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie Gaines, who sang backup vocals for the band. (The resilient Pyle took some pellets in the shoulder but lived.)Īlthough that probably stands as the nadir of Pyle’s career with Skynyrd, the terrible truth is, compared with some of his bandmates, he got off easy. When the hirsute Pyle finally reached civilization in the form of a farmhouse, he was a jabbering, blood-splattered mess who looked, to use his own description, “like Charlie Manson.” The farmer, being the kind of “simple man” Lynyrd Skynyrd liked to celebrate in its songs, did the natural thing: He produced a shotgun and shot the longhair. 20, 1977, drummer Artimus Pyle slogged through the muck to get help. After the Convair 240 chartered by Lynyrd Skynyrd plunged from the sky into a Mississippi swamp on Oct. This can range from seeing shimmering or zig-zag lines to parts of their vision blurring, dimming or even disappearing! Visual aura typically affects half of your field of vision and lasts between 10 and 20 minutes. Many people who get migraine headaches experience a visual display or ‘visual aura’ before, during or after the main event. This is generally short-lived until the jelly naturally comes away completely from the back layer (retina). It occurs when there is a pull or tug on the light-sensitive cells of the retina in areas where the jelly is still attached. During this process, some people may notice an occasional flash or sparkle of light as they move their eyes – this is particularly apparent in dark room conditions. As the jelly shrinks further and some parts start to come away from the back layer (retina). While they are ever present, we tend to be more aware of them against bright, uniform light conditions such as a clear blue sky or a white wall in a well-lit room. They move across the vision with eye movements, casting a shadow on the light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye, which fire off signals that we perceive as floaters. Over time, this jelly naturally shrinks and separates, leaving small clumps of cells and particles floating in liquid (think of a shaken snow globe). The space between the lens and the back layer (retina) of our eyes is filled by a jelly-like substance called the ‘vitreous’. Floaters gradually increase in number with age, and are a very common presentation in people aged over 50 years. Who gets flashes and floaters?įlashes and floaters occur more frequently in people who are short-sighted, or have had previous eye surgery, injury or trauma to the eye. Flashes and floaters are not usually something to be alarmed about but here we ‘shine some light’ on the topic so you know when to seek advice. Some individuals also experience ‘flashes’, which appear as small sparkles in their vision. They appear to move across the vision, which has provided the basis for their technical name – ‘floaters’. Some people describe them as “hairs, flies or cobwebs”, which they often try in vain to swat away. It is very common for people to notice dark or semi-transparent dots or squiggly lines in their vision from time to time.
